Location
On the Maratua atoll, about 1.5 hours beyond Derawan
Nabucco is a rim islet of the Maratua atoll, close to Nunukan Island. It is small enough to walk around in a few minutes and has no town, no market and no public transport: the reef wall and channel water on its doorstep are the reason anyone stays there.
Getting there is a chain: Kalimarau Airport (BEJ) in Berau, about 2.5 to 3 hours by road to Tanjung Batu, around 40 minutes by speedboat to Derawan Island, then about another 1.5 hours into the Maratua atoll.

An atoll base suits divers and punishes short trips
The atoll puts you on the doorstep of the wall and the channel, and 1.5 hours further from the mainland on arrival and departure day.

Most recreational dives in the area run between about 5 and 30 metres, with a reef top shallow enough for snorkellers.

What a stay in the Maratua area costs
Accommodation on our trips is priced inside the package, because the boat, guide and vehicle are shared costs. Published Indonesia Juara rates, nett.
Included: car from Kalimarau Airport to Tanjung Batu, private speedboat, your stay, meals, snorkel kit, documentation, travel insurance and entrance fees. Not included: flights, fins, tips and personal expenses. The price depends on the stay; larger groups pay less each.
Flights to Berau (BEJ) are not included. Rates as published on indonesiajuara.asia.
When to go
The best season for an atoll stay is April to November
April to November is the best season. December to March is the wetter period, when crossings between Derawan Island and the Maratua atoll are less reliable, and on a three-day trip that can cost an island day. It matters more for an atoll-rim stay than any other base, because every move to and from your bed is a sea crossing.
Green turtles are resident year-round. Mantas are likely rather than promised on any single day.
