What a Derawan homestay actually is
A homestay here is owned and run by island residents: usually a handful of rooms beside a family house, not a hotel with a front desk.
Indonesia Juara does not book homestays or sell bare rooms: the most affordable stays on our Private Trip are the water cottages of Reza Derawan Resort and Water Cottage Alfit VIP Derawan, and solo travellers join the Open Trip. Someone still has to move you between the islands, and on Derawan that logistics layer is the expensive part, not the mattress.

How much budget accommodation in Derawan costs
Rooms, boats and guides move together here, so the whole trip is priced rather than the night. Published Indonesia Juara rates, nett.
If budget decides, the most effective move is not downgrading the room but adding people: larger groups pay less each. Travelling alone? The Open Trip Derawan 4D3N is USD 280 per person with a minimum of 7 guests; a single room adds USD 60 for the three nights.

When to book
April to November is the best season
April to November is the best season, when small-boat transfers between Derawan, Kakaban, Sangalaki and Maratua are most reliable; December to March is the wetter period. Village rooms are finite and family-owned: Indonesian school holidays and long weekends take them first.
