Is a Derawan trip worth it from Bali?

For many travellers, yes: remote Coral Triangle biodiversity, major turtle nesting beaches and mantas at Sangalaki. Days cost more than on busier islands, but the trip is more nature-focused and less crowded.

What is included in the trip price?

On the private trip: car from Kalimarau Airport to Tanjung Batu and back, private speedboat, stay, meals, snorkel kit, documentation, travel insurance and entrance fees. Not included: flights, fins, tips and personal expenses.

Are there senior-friendly and multi-generation options?

Yes: calm-water snorkelling in life vests, village walks, turtle-watching from jetties and boat-based sightseeing. Our Derawan trips are snorkel-based; scuba diving is not included.

Do conservation or entry fees add to the price?

Entrance fees are included in our Private Trip and Open Trip. Such fees support the Berau Marine Protected Area and village-led projects around the turtle nesting beaches.

Getting there is the biggest line

From Bali you fly (booked by you) to Kalimarau Airport (BEJ) in Berau, where we meet you. Flights are not included in our trip prices.

From Berau, a car takes about 2.5 to 3 hours to Tanjung Batu jetty and a speedboat about 40 minutes to Derawan.

Packages bundle the road and boat legs from Kalimarau (BEJ). Private trip prices depend on group size, where you stay and the Standard or Premium tier.

Food

Warungs cost less than southern Bali

Local meals of rice, fish and vegetables at Derawan warungs are generally cheaper than in southern Bali. Resort restaurants and seafood dinners cost more, especially on the smaller islands, where supply logistics are complex.

On our trips, meals are included: 6 on the 3D2N and 9 on the 4D3N.

Snorkelling and soft-adventure days cost less than full-equipment dive days, and suit seniors and children well. Our Derawan trips are snorkel-based; scuba diving is not included.

Local rules

Conservation, dress and rain days

The Berau Marine Protected Area sets strict anchoring rules in sensitive coral zones, so operators use mooring buoys where possible. In villages, cover shoulders and knees, especially away from the beach.

April to November is the best season; December to March is the wetter period, with January and February typically the heaviest. Our open-trip departures are published in every month.
