The atoll

A UNESCO tentative-list atoll of 31 islands

The Derawan Atoll off East Kalimantan is on the UNESCO tentative list. It has 31 islands, with Derawan Island at its centre and the base for this plan.

More than 460 coral species are recorded here. Green turtles, whale sharks and manta rays are protected species in these waters, and Kakaban has a lake of stingless jellyfish.

Day by day

The 5-day route, day by day

General guidance only: Indonesia Juara does not run a 5-day trip. Our Derawan trips are 3D2N and 4D3N. In this plan every night is spent on Derawan Island.

  1. Berau → Derawan

    Day 1 · Arrival

Land at Kalimarau Airport (BEJ) in Berau, about 2.5 to 3 hours by road to Tanjung Batu, then about 40 minutes by speedboat to Derawan. Snorkel off the jetty, sunset.

  2. Jellyfish lake

    Day 2 · Kakaban & Maratua

Kakaban: swim in the stingless jellyfish lake. Then Maratua for reef snorkelling.

  3. Mantas & turtles

    Day 3 · Sangalaki

Snorkel with manta rays at the cleaning stations, then visit the turtle conservation post.

  4. Slow day

    Day 4 · Derawan Island

A guided walk through Derawan village (about 1,200 residents), an optional cooking class, and a longboat at sunset.

  5. Derawan → Berau

    Day 5 · Return

Last swim, then about 40 minutes by speedboat and about 2.5 to 3 hours by road back to Kalimarau Airport. Allow for that when you book the return flight.
