On the outer atoll, not on Derawan Island
Maratua is the outer atoll of the archipelago: a horseshoe of land wrapped around a shallow inner lagoon, roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by speedboat beyond Derawan Island. Sleeping there changes the shape of every day on the water.
You wake up on the doorstep of the atoll walls and the main channel, so water days start with a short boat ride. In exchange you are further from the mainland and the village life of Derawan, with a longer transfer on arrival and departure day.

The trip includes the car to Tanjung Batu, private speedboat, your stay, meals, snorkel kit, documentation, travel insurance and entrance fees. Flights, fins, tips and personal expenses are not included. Premium adds a tour leader and drone, GoPro and mirrorless documentation with video editing.

When to go
April to November, and how to get there
April to November is the best season and December to March the wetter period: a resort on Maratua is only as good as the boat that reaches it. The route runs through Berau: Kalimarau Airport (BEJ), about 2.5 to 3 hours by road to Tanjung Batu, around 40 minutes by speedboat to Derawan, then about 1.5 to 2 hours more to Maratua.
Over-water rooms and the premium tier fill earliest in the middle months; groups of six or more should ask several months ahead.
