Short hops matter for multigenerational groups with toddlers, elders or motion-sensitive teens. Derawan's sea averages about 28 °C all year, so nobody needs a thick wetsuit.

Conservative guide ratios and reef-safe habits
For family groups, guides work at about one guide to four to six guests in the water, so every child and adult is watched. Life jackets are part of the snorkel kit and are insisted on for weaker swimmers, with a briefing refresher before first-time sessions.
Inside the marine protected area, use mineral-based or reef-friendly sunscreen, apply it in the room 20–30 minutes before swimming, and put kids in long-sleeve rash guards to cut the amount entering the sea.

Daily logistics
A private speedboat instead of public boats
After landing at Kalimarau in Berau, a private car takes you about 2.5–3 hours to Tanjung Batu, then a speedboat reaches Derawan in about 40 minutes. On a private trip the island days use your own speedboat, the easy choice with luggage, strollers or older relatives.
Public boats serve local commuters, generally once a day, and cannot always be reserved, which is hard with fixed flight times or young kids. On the islands, days are planned around short rides and short walks.

Indonesia Juara does not sell separate family deals. A Private Trip Derawan (2–10 guests) starts from USD 1,290 in total for two guests on 3D2N and USD 2,190 for two on 4D3N; the price depends on the stay, and larger groups pay less each. The Open Trip 4D3N is USD 280 per person. Flights from Bali are extra.
