Marine and diving safety

Boats, crew and dives

Marine operations are the heart of a Derawan trip, so this is where most of our safety work goes.

  1. Ditjen Hubla

    Seaworthy vessels

Every vessel we use, owned or chartered, is certified by the Directorate General of Sea Transportation and inspected regularly.

  2. On board

    SOLAS-grade equipment

GPS, radar, satellite phone, EPIRB beacon, life rafts, first-aid kit and medical-grade oxygen.

  3. Captains and engineers

    Certified crew

Indonesian seamanship certificates (ANT and ATT IV/V). Guest-facing crew hold First Aid and CPR certification.

  4. Every stop

    Snorkel-based trips

Our Derawan trips are snorkel-based; scuba diving is not included. The snorkel kit includes a life jacket, and guides are with you at every stop.

  5. Checks

    Maintained equipment

Daily pre-departure checks, monthly servicing, dive gear inspected after use and compressors serviced every 150 operating hours.

  6. Annual and quarterly

    Trained guides

Annual training in first aid, CPR and emergency oxygen, with quarterly refresher courses.

Land transport

Safe from the airport to the jetty

Our private and open trips start at Kalimarau Airport (BEJ) in Berau. A car takes you on the 2.5 to 3 hour road to Tanjung Batu, then a speedboat covers the roughly 40 minutes to Derawan. Flights are not included in our trips.

Our vehicles follow a logged maintenance schedule and carry GPS tracking. Drivers are licensed, have safe driving records and are trained in defensive driving.

  • Meeting point: Kalimarau Airport (BEJ)
  • Car BEJ to Tanjung Batu and back
  • GPS-tracked, maintained vehicles
  • Licensed, trained drivers

Reef safety

Safeguarding Derawan's marine environment

The Derawan Islands are on UNESCO's World Heritage tentative list. Our safety rules protect the reef as well as our guests.

In the water and on land

  • Leave no trace

On every excursion, with refuse removed from the islands responsibly.

  • Buoyancy and no-touch

Strictly enforced in the water to protect the coral that draws whale sharks and green turtles.

  • Local conservation

We work with marine biologists and communities to monitor endangered species.
