The Nature Conservancy Indonesia
We consult TNC research on the Berau Marine Conservation Area and support its local initiatives.
About · Partners
A remote trip is only as good as the people behind it. The conservation, logistics and accommodation partners we work with, each vetted by our methodology.
Our network
We have spent years building relationships with organisations that share our commitment to excellence, safety and sustainability. Every partner is vetted against our methodology.
Our operations comply with Indonesian law. Dive operations follow PADI standards for safety and training, with dive staff holding professional PADI certifications.
Conservation & science
Protecting the archipelago is central to what we do. These are the organisations whose work shapes how we operate.
Aviation & logistics
Seamless travel is a cornerstone of the service. Every trip meets at Kalimarau Airport (BEJ) in Berau.
| Partner | Role |
|---|---|
| Garuda Indonesia | Preferred airline for domestic connections to Kalimarau Airport (BEJ) |
| Road & speedboat | Car from BEJ to Tanjung Batu (about 2.5 to 3 h), then speedboat to Derawan (about 40 min) |
Flights are not included in trip prices.

Where our trips stay
The water cottages and resorts offered on Private Trip Derawan. You choose the stay, the price depends on it, and it is confirmed in writing before you pay.
Private Trip Derawan rates from indonesiajuara.asia: total for two guests, standard tier.
Community
We support coral reef restoration, marine wildlife protection and waste management. Every trip visits the turtle conservation site on Sangalaki.
Our partners prioritise fair employment, with a significant share of staff and guides from communities around Derawan. We report that over 1,000 metres of damaged reef in the Derawan Atoll have been rehabilitated in the past five years.
Activity partners
Our activity partners are chosen for safety records, equipment and passion. Our Derawan trips are snorkel-based and scuba diving is not included; the snorkel stops include the manta rays at Manta Point off Sangalaki.
At Kakaban's Jellyfish Lake you swim among stingless jellyfish; fins are not allowed in the lake. Above water, partners run island hopping to lagoons, sandbars and quiet beaches.
